Remote Rehabilitation for Individuals Living with Parkinson's
For those living with Parkinson’s disease, engaging in daily exercise is crucial for preserving and enhancing physical functionality in daily activities. However, maintaining a consistent exercise regimen can be a challenge for many. The remote rehabilitation unit offers a controlled therapeutic framework through a series of activities and videos with online clinical support to help you maintain the necessary practice from the comfort of your home.
Motor-cognitive Program
Self-directed practice, facilitated by software, offers a diverse range of activations designed to enhance motor skills and cognitive abilities. These are both engaging and challenging, fostering motivation, so that patients experience genuine challenges that not only make the process enjoyable but also significantly improve their movement and cognitive functions.
The therapist, occupational therapist, or physiotherapist from Sheba, tailor the activations personally, while guiding and providing real-time feedback to the patient. The patient also receives a series of exercises they can perform at home on the system in their free time (self-directed practice is available to suitable patients, based on the therapist's clinical judgment).
The therapist generates various follow-up reports on the activity carried out through the system, including verification that the patient is practicing independently at home.
A personalized cognitive track
The therapy focuses on imparting strategies to improve the patient’s ability to perform daily activities such as basic self-care (dressing, bathing, eating) and extended tasks (diary management, shopping, financial management), work, study, and leisure. All this while addressing cognitive difficulties - memory and attention problems, organizational difficulties, and more.
The therapy is provided by an occupational therapist via a personal video call, during which topics are discussed according to the difficulties raised by the patient.
Speech Therapy Program
Difficulties in speech production occur in about 80% of patients with Parkinson's disease, mainly in the more advanced stages of the illness. The professional term that describes these difficulties is hypokinetic dysarthria. The issues include a weak and monotonous voice, hoarseness, and breathiness during speech. Pronunciation is also less precise, and patients may struggle to control their speech pace, risking speaking too quickly or too slowly.
Online voice and speech therapy allows patients to receive intensive treatments at a high frequency over a short period, which have been proven effective. In the remote rehabilitation system, voice metrics (intensity and pitch) are displayed on the computer screen, enabling measurement and precision of speech quality.
The treatment plan, following an entry diagnosis and on-boarding, includes online voice and speech therapies via video with a frequency of 3 sessions per week for 5 weeks (15 treatments) and one maintenance group session per week for 5 weeks.
Psychological Therapy Program
Psychological treatment is suitable for individuals who have experienced significant impairment in their functioning due to Parkinson's disease, and it assists in fostering independence and the ability to cope with changes. The treatment is provided by psychologists working at the Movement Disorders Institute at Sheba, who have specific experience in treating Parkinson's-related issues.
The service is also designed to help family members who are adjusting to the new situation.
