About us

Sheba BEYOND, Israel’s very first virtual hospital, provides human-centered healthcare services in the comfort of the patient’s home. We combine the medical expertise of Sheba Medical Center’s leading clinicians with innovative care models and ground-breaking technologies in order to redesign treatment and care.

Sheba Medical Center, ranked by Newsweek as one of the Top 10 hospitals in the world, and leading in the fields of science and medicine, has made remarkable breakthroughs in digital health. Now, the most professional doctors and specialists are available to everyone, whether they are in the center of the country, the periphery, or even overseas.

Sheba BEYOND manages dozens of virtual clinics and over 100 clinical staff in a variety of fields who process hundreds of virtual visits daily. During the Covid-19 crisis, Sheba BEYOND’s experts — oncologists, psychiatrists, pediatricians, GIs, dieticians, and more — provided over 50,000 consultations for patients in Israel and worldwide.

Sheba BEYOND operates unique programs that are the first of their kind in Israel. These include: home admissions for internal medicine as well as psychiatry, home care for post-operative patients; remote monitoring for patients with chronic illness, remote rehabilitation and even preventive health services in the patient’s home.

Quality Treatment

The hospital may be virtual, but the treatment itself is real and tangible; we are closely familiar with our patients, their families (and at times, even their pets!). The virtual visit creates a close, intimate atmosphere, sometimes even more so than when meeting face-to-face. It is truly patient-doctor “quality time.”

Thanks to advanced technology that performs constant monitoring, virtual technology preserves treatment continuity, ensuring that each patient will receive the most appropriate treatment for them – often even before the patient is aware of the need for it. Thus, we are able not only to treat the condition, but prevent its deterioration.

New technologies give both doctors and patients control and control, and they may reduce morbidity, detect and warn of deterioration or complications and thus improve the quality of treatment and save the need to go to the clinic or the hospital. Thus, we believe that virtual medicine will occupy a central place in the future and become a treatment standard and the new hope of the health world.

Convenience

There’s no place like home.

The virtual visit takes place in the patient’s natural environment, at home. For patients with chronic conditions who are in need of ongoing monitoring, the convenience of virtual visits cannot be overemphasized. This is also the ideal solution for patients who live far from the medical center, patients suffering from disabilities, or those who are in quarantine.

Anyone, at any age, can easily connect to Sheba BEYOND’s telemedicine services; there’s no need to download an app or to purchase sophisticated devices. To begin a virtual visit, all you have to do is press the link sent via text message.

For special programs such as cardiac rehabilitation, psychiatric home hospitalization, or remote monitoring of chronically ill patients, the connection takes place via a designated app. In this case, the necessary devices will be provided by the specific department, which will also provide guidance for use.

Dr. Galia Barkai, Director of Sheba BEYOND virtual hospital

Dr. Galia Barkai is a pediatrician with an MBA from Tel Aviv University who specializes in infectious diseases. She is also a graduate of the Inbar Program, a joint project of the Health Ministry and Maoz Association, whose goal is to train directors and leaders who will work together to advance Israel’s health system.

When the coronavirus pandemic erupted in March 2020, Dr. Barkai established the first Covid-19 unit in Israel, based on technology that enabled medical staff to communicate with and monitor patients from a distance.

In the last several years, Dr. Barkai has managed telemedicine at Sheba, contributing to the development and operation of innovative services of remote medicine, including rehab programs, managing and monitoring patients remotely, and home admissions. In October 2020, she was appointed Director of Sheba BEYOND, Israel’s first virtual hospital.
