Research: remote treatment of epilepsy
Prof. Nicola Maggio, service director and deputy director of the neurology department, alongside Dr. Uriel Fennig, also from neurology, are leading a research pilot to evaluate CareTuner, an innovative digital platform for the online treatment of epilepsy patients.
The study explores how the treatment affects the patient's experience, quality of life, and satisfaction. It also investigates how using the CareTuner platform influences the disease's balance, focusing on changes in seizure frequency, how well patients comply with their medication regimen, and the side effects of the medication.
The treatment platform itself has been approved by the Advanced Technology Center (ATC) at the Sheba Medical Center, and is already being implemented in epilepsy clinics.
What does the study involve?
The platform is based on the use of an app on the mobile device on the patient's side, which is linked to control software on the side of the treatment unit. The dedicated app allows ongoing monitoring of seizures and monitoring of mental symptoms, while providing a quick response from the treating team. At the same time, there is constant monitoring of additional indicators such as taking regular medications and a sleep diary.
The study involves daily remote monitoring conducted by a nurse, acting as a Case Manager, using an app. This app facilitates the process by automatically tracking indicators and collecting questionnaire data.
Who is the pilot study aimed at?
The study is intended for epilepsy patients over the age of 18, patients of the Epilepsy Clinic at the Sheba Medical Center.

Please be aware: this platform is designed for ongoing management of chronic conditions, not for immediate care. Utilising the app should not substitute for visiting the emergency room when required.
