Burn treatment pilot for children in home-based care

Burns are one of the most common injuries among children and occur mainly in early childhood and in the winter months.  Caring for burn victims, especially children, is intricate and requires a multidisciplinary approach encompassing daily treatments, surgical procedures, psychological support, physical rehabilitation, occupational therapy, among others.
Sheba BEYOND Hospital and the National Burns Unit at Sheba Hospital, under the leadership of Dr. Moti Harats, the Director of the National Intensive Care Unit for Burns, launched an innovative pilot program focused on providing high-quality, comprehensive burn treatment for children in the comfort of their homes.  This comprehensive treatment program included on-going follow-up, remote support, symptom monitoring, and pain management.

As part of the pilot, a multidisciplinary team was established that employed a blend of digital and advanced technologies, including smartwatches, to enable continuous, detailed monitoring of patients' conditions, burn recovery progress, and other vital metrics.

The pilot program also aimed to guide parents by giving clear instructions for home care, while still providing uncompromising top-notch medical care,  giving families peace of mind and improving quality of life for both the child and their family.

Furthermore, the program offered tools to enhance the therapeutic process and facilitated a smooth transition from in-hospital care to home-based treatment within the community, via a secure platform for delivering remote medical services. The objective was to reduce the duration of hospital stays, minimise the risk of readmissions, and decrease the dependency on emergency medical clinics.

The ARC Innovation Center, in partnership with Dr. Harats and the National Burns Unit at Sheba, developed the program which is designed to facilitate online follow-ups and treatments, integrating in-hospital and at-home care, tailored to the patient's individual needs, by the program's dedicated team.
