Online treatment for inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD)

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) impact a significant number of people. In Israel, there are approximately 52,000 individuals living with IBD, equating to about 520 cases per 100,000 people. Treating these conditions involves a comprehensive team approach, addressing physical, psychological, and behavioural aspects, which demands considerable resources.

Sheba BEYOND Hospital, under Dr. Galia Barkai's leadership and in partnership with Prof. Uri Kopylov, Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Service at Sheba Gastroenterology Institute, is conducting an innovative research pilot, aimed at enhancing follow-up care for IBD patients, thanks to new developments from the Sheba Innovation Center, ARC (Accelerate, Redesign, Collaborate).
The study involves remote monitoring by an IBD nurse, acting as a case manager; monitoring is done through a smart app that combines questionnaire responses and automatic tracking of health indicators, along with monitoring inflammation markers (calprotectin) in stool samples.
Sheba BEYOND's remote monitoring allows for constant observation, making it possible to consider changes in medical treatment based on these findings.

What does the program involve?

Tracking patients' conditions over several months with a smartphone.

Who is the research targeting?

Patients receiving care at the Gastroenterology Institute within Sheba Medical Center.

What advantages does the research offer to patients?

Currently, securing an appointment in gastroenterology can take months. Introducing an effective online solution could significantly enhance the daily lives of patients suffering from these conditions, enhancing their quality of life.
